“New Year? New You?”: Happy New Year!

I thought I’d get a jump on wishing you all a Happy New Year. As you know, I totally biffed the 2020 Christmas greetings. Like a 48 year old former skateboard champion that is fat and out of shape; I crashed and burned on the halfpipe of life and forgot to really doing a nice holiday greetings to my dear readers. I can feel your disappointment.

Now I’m trying to make amends for my lack of enthusiasm during the holidays with this blog post. As you all know, I have already discussed in a previous post how I don’t belief in New Year’s Resolutions for myself. However, I’m still here to help you because we all know that YOU really need help.

My wonderful attitude of helping others may have brushed off onto my daughter and that is going to be a problem for me. She is set on making New Year’s resolutions and making new goals for everyone (which includes me). Jeez, if you thought I was annoying with my life coaching, you should meet her. I can’t help every former Boeing employee find their own direction and purpose in their retired life, but I can help the one slacker I know in Arizona with my worthless advice. (Poor bastard is adrift…he’s lucky to have me.)

My daughter has adopted that awesome Life Coach attitude but her focus is ME. I’m in trouble.

She wants me to exercise more (I’m already doing that), she wants me to do positive affirmations and tell myself I’m young and healthy (I’m not), and to limit my alcohol intake (I’ve run out of whiskey so that won’t be a problem).

All noble goals to be taken seriously. And you know how serious I am.

However, using New Year’s as an excuse to create a reason to be better is a foolish endeavor. You should always be trying to improve yourself throughout the year. Why wait for this special day? And on top of all this, you end up failing and the next thing you know, January is the month of all your personal failures. Ew. No thanks. If I’m going to fail, it is going to be a year round event! Why limit it to a single month? I want to be a failure all the time.

Enjoy your private New Year’s Eve Party at home and think of all the things you aren’t going to change because it is a New Year. Instead, think of all the things you will be improving throughout the year. And when you fail, that is OK, you’ll still have eleven other months to try again and fail again.

Cheers!

Holidays…are they over yet?

Hopefully, your various winter holidays turned out the way you wanted.  Some of you are chasing the childhood dream of the perfect holiday…to recreate that feeling you had in your youth; waking up celebrating and opening gifts.  Perhaps your parents were awesome, the presents wonderful, the food mouthwatering, which resulted in your family making every holiday an amazing one.  Then again, while you may remember your holiday as a fantastic voyage of deightful winter images, others are trying to build a magical time to wipe away the nightmares of holidays past.  The bad food, the disappointed underwear gift from your grandma, and the ruined dried out turkey for dinner.

Whatever, you maybe feeling during this time of year, I hope you survived it.  Personally, anything that happens after Thanksgiving (American style) is a blur for me. It seems as if we rush through the days of December, we haphazardly trip over Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa in our final push for the New Year’s Eve Day Party (which is really the only holiday party we honestly all enjoy).  Sorry, did I miss any holiday in my politically correct post?
But we don’t enjoy the coming of the New Year, do we? We think about our past year and what we wanted to do. We think of the hours we wasted on frilivous smartphone games, bad movies, and worthless advice blogs we read.  Do you have regrets? Possibly you do.  Does that make you dread the new year?

But wait, we have a New Year and a new set of goals in a few days!  And this will be the year we accomplish all the things we failed to do over this past year.  Or at least we tell yourselves we will.
So get get out there and prepare for the new year! The holidays are over, enjoy the coming of 2016!

Don’t Give Up Coffee! Give up your expensive, fattening Coffee Drink!

With all the New Year’s Resolutions flying around, the one resolution that particular bothers me is: People giving up drinking coffee. I understand people want to get healthier. But why deny yourself something so wonderful as coffee? That wonderful drink that helps you get through the day?  That old pal that helps you stay awake?  The drink that allows you to bond with your co-workers while complaining about your boss?  Why give up on that old friend?

I know you think giving up coffee is a good time…I understand you want to be true to your New Year’s Resolutions.  However, may I make a suggestion?  Load up that cup of coffee with all the bad stuff you can find.  Make that cup of coffee the worst possible drink out there (this is exactly what Starbucks does) and then give it up.

Heck, the coffee isn’t the bad part….just think about a “coffee drink” from Starbucks.  That is what is bad.

Think about it for a  minute.  Take a wonderful cup of coffee…

Add loads of sugar (or honey…cane sugar…sweetner)

…add in some whole milk or maybe even some nice half-and-half

…make that into a coffee drink (because it really isn’t a cup of coffee anymore is it?)

and now give it up.  Give up all that bad stuff that you have come to love in your coffee.  That will make you feel better about that silly New Year’s Resolution you made in the heat of a New Year’s Eve’s moment (when you were weak because your old pal coffee wasn’t there).  You know you wouldn’t have made that resolution on New Year’s Day in the morning at breakfast.  No, you made that resolution the night before when you were with our casual friend “Alcohol”.

Sure you and Alcohol go way back, don’t you?  But Alcohol isn’t with you every day.  Do you know who is?  Coffee.

Old Alcohol was trying to get you to ditch your true friend Coffee.  Don’t ditch Coffee.  Alcohol only comes to hang out during the fun events like football games and birthday parties.  Coffee is there, day in and day out.  Don’t substitute a sure thing with something that only likes to party once in a while with you.

Of course, it isn’t too bad when alcohol and coffee get together at the same time to party with you.  A nice cold Sunday afternoon with your two pals Coffee and Alcohol makes a wonderful end to a weekend.  They get along perfectly and they make the weekend a blast.

Special thanks to Nick over at Nick’s Blog for this post idea…

End of Winter Vacation & Fat Ass Dads Weight Loss Challenge

It’s back to the salt mines tomorrow for my family. The kids head back to school and I return to my job as a mild mannered photographer. I have some projects and billing to finish up this week. My wife has been working on and off over the holiday break so she is more in tune with returning to work. I’m optimistic that I’ll get back into the grove of things.

Over the break, I warned my fellow Fat Ass Dads that this would the tough part of the challenge: surviving the holidays and all the treats. Ah…Christmas cookies, fudge, chocolate, cakes… All the good stuff. What about New Year’s Eve? Did you stuff your face? Did you consume huge quantities of your favorite beverage?

So here we are on January 4, now I’m hoping your hangover is all cleared up and you can focus on your life. I don’t know about you, but I don’t do the resolution reforms or goals. I know there are some things I need to improve on. I also know that some things are out of my control and cannot be changed. Keeping that in mind, one should always be working to improve themselves. Work to better yourself and everyone around you will benefit.

Thanks for reading. Now get back to improving yourself.
